This is a weird one, and I’m not really sure where it belongs....

Anyway, I was approached on LinkedIn by a corporate HR type (not outside recruiter) about a job that looked interesting. I was given a link and asked to apply. Before I had a chance to do that, they requested I NOT apply.

Turns out they found my FB page (profile pic shows me diving, my page is locked down so you can’t see anything if you’re not a friend) and consider my hobby too dangerous to be considered as a possible employee. I thought that was pretty funny.

Who knows what they would have done if they knew the other hobby (which has suffered since I started diving)! :D

Truly unfortunate that this employer is so uniformed about Scuba.

Hopefully you will continue your pursuit of both employment and diving.

Personally, I was also involved in an activity that is considered to be risky, in addition to diving, but that was prior to the invention of either Facebook or the Internet, so it was never an issue.

I'm imagining your profile pic with both hobbies...LOL

I’m gainfully employed and wasn’t looking at the moment. The position looked interesting, though.

I haven't had it with employment, but when I took out disability insurance for work reasons, the premium doubled the moment that the sales-drone heard I dive. Apparently it is classified as a dangerous hobby. And yet they don't push up premiums if you drive, which is by far more dangerous :(

And what about those people that live in areas with palm trees? those coconuts are more dangerous!

Our health and life insurance also makes us pay higher premiums, but for a job, that's just ludicrous o_O

Since the premium doubled, I’m assuming diving related injuries were being covered?

When I bought LTD, the premium was normal but they excluded diving related injuries.

That is weird. I'm surprised they didn't simply ask you not to dive, or limit your diving.

A CEO friend of mine and amateur pilot was told he had to have a commercial pilot in the cockpit when he flew.

No. Diving related injuries were not covered. It was simply stated that I'm a higher risk.
