Getting my my own rig all set up and using Atomic M1’s for my regs. I have up until now always used someone else’s SM rig. Dive rite regs. For my own I wanted the Atomics, so I am just curious to find out how the hoses are set up. The first stages are lop sided in comparison to the dive rites.

Nomad XT bcd inflator up top, Al80’s, regs down, miflex hoses, dual long hose, Drysuit.

It's got a 5th port yeah? The most common sidemount regulator configuration is inflator out of 5th port, SPG out of whatever bottom HP port is on the reg, bungee'd second on the turret so it can swivel into position, for the left tank. Right side tank is inflator out of 5th port, SPG out of whatever bottom HP port is on the reg, long hose on the turret so it can swivel up and forward for donation.

You may have to do some fiddling with the inflator hose configuration since the Nomad XT is goofy and comes from the top of the wing over the shoulder.

Why the dual long hose?

Thank u for the response. Yes swivel turrets and 5th ports. As for the dual long hoses. Already had them. Brand new, never been wet. I am not opposed to buying a shorter hose. But figured I have them why not just use it. Then I can donate either reg if need be.

I don't know anyone who teaches dual long hose. That's super weird to me. Who was your SM instructor? Someone in AZ?

The issue is that now you've always got to have your second hose clipped off, which means if you do have to donate, while the other guy has gas, now you have to unclip to get a reg in your mouth. That puts you at risk, and since your buddy is OOG, you're now putting both of you at risk. If you don't get that reg unclipped and in your mouth, you don't get gas, which means now you're now OOG, while your buddy is OOG but attached to you. Super bad day if you drown and start dragging your buddy with you. You've turned a single incident into a multiple victim incident.

Safest configuration in my mind is a bungee'd second of whatever length is required, long hose on the other side. Personally I long hose the right tank, routes across my chest and around my neck. Secondary comes from left tank behind my neck to a bungee just like backmounted doubles. If donating, long hose gets donated same as back mount, and the rest of the hose gets pulled from the tank, like if you were pulling it from a can light once all is sorted.

Having an unsecured second stage is never an option. Some people with reversible second stages will come straight off the tank into their mouth or to a bungee, but all second stages should be secured either by being clipped off when not breathing them, or on a bungee around your neck. Some guys won't bungee a second stage like normal, they'll clip their second stage to a necklace with a bolt snap. I don't do it, but some people like it.

Obviously if you're stage diving, you're going to have more stuff to deal with, and in that case, since you're breathing just your stage and not switching, once you drop it or breathe it down, you stow it like any normal stowed reg. Since you're never going to be donating a stage, when it's packed up and stowed it will be out of the way anyway.

2nd (left) long hose is routed down alongside the tank, up and around neck and bungeed with a 90* swivel. Exactly how it would be with a short hose. Just routes down side of tank before it comes up and around neck. The 1st (right) long hose no change in routing. Ball swivel and bolt snap to clip off when breathing off Left tank. Different swivel easier to clip and unclip, and another identifier as to which tank I am breathing off of with different swivels.

I didn’t learn dual long hose from instructor. As I said I happen to already have the hoses . In doing so I have done a bit of research on the dual long hose and found there are plenty of people diving that way, and their opinions on it.

My question wasn’t hose routing wasn’t about donating wasn’t about anything other then what ports other divers where using if they were diving the M1’s. Due to the way the tower in the M1 1st stage is offset to the DIN fitting when compared to the dive rites (which is all I have used to dive in SM) I chose to go with atomics because I am certified to do my own service and rebuild on them. So being able to service all of my own regs keeps my costs down and easier for me to keep track of. Plus I like atomics. I have dive rite regs for my deco bottles and already have to pay to send them off and be serviced. Rather just be able to do my own and not be without my regs because I am waiting on them.

Thank you for the concern and added information. I don’t know everything, nor do I profess too. I like to learn and also if safe try new things to find the best way suited for me. 1 of my dive buddies tried the dual long hose last week and actually prefers it over the short hose. He has been diving SM for 2 years (actually we took the class together). I have primarily stayed back mounted doubles in that 2 years. Only a handful of SM dives. He on the other hand now has well over 100 dives in SM. But again.... he has dive rites. Couldn’t answer my question either. The rest of my rig arrives today. I will set it up, try it. Practice it, and if dual long hose doesn’t suit me.... go to the short hose.

I use dual long hoses just as you describe. The left long hose is not for donating, but for better routing. It allows more freedom of movement for the left tank as a short hose strait off the reg gets pinned under my shoulder preventing me from pushing the tank out of the way to reach in front of me.

Hey man, that's the beauty of sidemount. If you can make it work safely, have at it. Once you get all your stuff and figure out all of your routing, post some pictures so the next time someone has this question, there's a reference.

U bet! Yes I agree. SAFE is the key point.

Maybe I am too dumb. :(

I always thought the main reason for a longhose is the donation to a OOA diver. If you use two longhoses, you intend to donate the left or right reg equally, depending on what you breath at the moment?
Both regs are routed behind the neck and coming from the right side. How do you manage the crossing of the hoses if you donate the left reg?

They don’t cross, they both lay side by side behind the neck. Even if they some how did get crossed (which is less likely to happen using 2 long hoses due to the routing they stay further apart then with a short hose) now you have extra space or length without the reg in your own mouth being yanked out. Once OOA diver is breathing and calmed. Easy to uncross the hoses and reset and get on your way out
