I already had a trip booked for November. I checked and my tickets are nonrefundable. I'm going and will dive in the limited area and do more things on the island instead of in the water. They were smart about doing it so fast as many (like me) will be unable to cancel their trips. I likely will NOT be going to Cozumel next year and I typically go at least once if not more. I doubt this will help the reefs much but if it does then maybe it is not all bad. I think it is going to prove either completely ineffective on helping the reef or devastating economically to the island (take your pick).

I think Nachi Cocom and the Maya Cruzoob are rising...

The military does copping there too. Local, state cop and the military on scene. And they thought those protests in front of the harbor masters were bad.

I’m gonna go with worse before better for 500, Alex.

Doesn’t matter, adult pool is closed, kiddie pool will become an overcrowded obstacle course and of course nothing will be done about enforcing the existing rules or other contributors to the problems.

Congratulations, you get nowhere but pissing people off, long term of course that’ll decrease the number of “impacts”

I was about to book last night for a December 6th trip, but saw this thread and held off. My wife is leaning to not go, am an leaning towards go.

But either way I am glad this thread was posted when it was, so I can make an informed decision.

We normally dive 4 times a day, have been to Coz three times already, not sure there is much more on the island I want to do besides diving.

Well they aren't the taxi union, but they are making a good go of it.

I'm just hoping this is about putting internal pressure on the feds to return more of the marine park fees for park enforcement. Cozumel is one of their cash cows. When the feds see marine park revenues cut in half it is going to affect lots of places and they are going to be upset. Will they give them the money needed for park rangers or will they clean house and send new people to re-open the park?

This article makes it sounds like they are not blaming divers for touching coral but gasoline from boats and sunscreen from people.

On Monday, Conanp announced a series of steps it will take in coordination with tourism service providers and researchers to confront the problem by reducing pollution generated by gasoline from boats and sunscreen.
Bleaching triggers closure of access to Cozumel reefs

I’m staying at the Grand Occidental this December. Am I happy? No, will I cnx? No. It is what it is...if I had to dive the same 8-12 sights so be it, I’ll get to know it more intimately. Having a few even if they’re great ones, sites closed, leaving NYC for sand and free tequila in December works just fine.

Good luck Christie....
