Thanks, he is signed up to do missions in April and May (4 different Saturdays). I will be there for 2 of them, the other 2 I will be in Wood Badge Staff Development sessions so my wife will take him. He is super excited.
Excellent! Forgot to mention I'm a cub dad, too. We have den meeting tonight actually.

Have you asked your scuba instructor if they would register as a merit badge counselor? It doesn't cost anything and could point more families to their business.
Hi Kevin, we did both our OW and AOW on vacations in the Caribbean, and didn't really think about the Boy Scout badges until recently. We are taking Nitrox locally later this month, so I may check with that instructor. Thanks!

My oldest son took a Padi Bubblemaker class last month and then did a second session this past weekend. He really enjoyed it and wants to keep going to a get certification one day and asked me to be his "buddy" so while he was doing the second Bubblemaker class I did a Discover Scuba class. It was familiar to when I did an intro class 25 years ago, but definitely different now that I am not a kid anymore. Looking forward to continuing the adventure with him.

Kevin
Awesome start.

Immediately after I did my OW I asked my son if he was interested - 16 yo at the time. Put him in a course and we did our first post cert dives together. Awesome journey and experience with him, now 24. Now he even buys his own gear and pays his own way on our trips!

Here's hoping you two develop the same shared love of the sport!

@Kevin L Waldrup
Wanted to share some good news. I did my checkout dives this past weekend so I an now officially an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver!

That is good and great news !
It must have been a wee bit chilly in Hoosier land, but--the air and the water does warm up
A big congratulations you are at the beginning of a possible life long adventure

Last week end March 09, 2019 I was honored to share the podium for the 10th time at the
10th Annual Diver Education Conference with my son Sam IV. As always it is a great unique honor to share an event with your son. It is an honor that unites and further cements the father /son relationship.

We also have the honor of being the only father and son to present at the annual SCUBA show in Long Beach , California.

John Mc Kinney, who is the son of the late great UW photographer Jack Mc Kinney was also a presenter. John began his diving adventures as a 7 year old under the tutelage of his late father.

Mark Spencer, who posts occasionally on this board as the @Scuba Lawyer was a first time presenter on "Sea Hunt Forever. " A portion of his introduction he showed pictures of him self as a pre schooler all dressed up to go diving and as a pre teen with a rope around his body and his father, the late Bob Spencer, holding on the other end while floating above Mark on a surf mat.

That was the way it was in the genesis of diving- before all the rule makers of corporate diving instruction

FYI - As a recently certified diver it is possibly difficult to comprehend that there are divers who have achieved the magic recorded 5000 dives and are the recipients of the coveted SSI Pro 5000 award---5 of the 7 on the program were Pro 5000 divers .. (Ask your fuzzy faced instructor about the SSI Pro 5000 )

FYI a synopsis of the program and the presenters

Dr. Sam Miller III Dive Historian -- Published UW Photographer and Author
“Early Development of Recreational Training Manuals”

Dr. Adam Abroms Board Certified Eye Surgeon & Ophthalmologist - ADV Vision Centers
“Ocular Issues in Diving Continued”

Selena McMillan PhD Southern California Regional Manager - Reef Check California
“Reef Check California; Citizen Science in Action”

Karl Huggins USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber Director - USC Wrigley Marine Science Center
“Dive Computer Interrogation – What they can and cannot tell you”

Dr. Sam Miller IV Hyperbaric & Undersea Medicine - Emergency Medicine Director - Marion Medical Center Emergency Medicine
“Random Thoughts on Dive Medicine”

John McKenney San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Deputy - John McKenney Productions – Underwater Documentary Film Maker
“Risked Based Response”

Mark Spencer Esq. Attorney, NAUI Instructor, SSI Pro 5000 Diver
“Sea Hunt, the TV Series”

And that was the way it was .. On a sunny warm Saturday in California, where it all began at the 10th Annual Diver Education Conference

My daughter was also certified at 12, now 20 and certified through rescue, and my son declined, doesn’t love the sea critters like we do.
I will say diving with your kids is an extra level of nervous. When she was 12, on our first dive together, we got separated in poor visibility. We both followed protocol and reconnected on the surface. Never happened again.
