I'm trying to go to Bonaire end of January, waiting to see if my travel agency can find a flight.

They offered me Divi Flamingo Hotel, any opinion?

It looks fair enough for my needs, and the price is interesting as well considering I'm coming all the way from Europe.

Is the Divi Diving Centre good?

Anything else to recommend considering I don't want to rent a car and would rather be pampered (pickup at the hotel and all)?

Hi chiara,

Divi is at a (10-15 min.) walking distance from the center of Kralendijk. It doesn't have a beach, but a pier with sun beds. I think it's rather cozy and colorfull. It's also one of the 2 locations where KLM houses their crews (Plaza Resort being the other). Speaking of KLM, if your travelagent can't find a direct flight, you might want to consider flying to Curacao and then hopping over with BonairExel (I don't recommend DCA). Prices on the Amsterdam-Curacao route have dropped tremendously due to a price war between KLM, DCA and Air Holland.
By the way, a car *would* add to your fun; Bonaire is shore diving capital of the world, after all. Plus, there more than enough other nice places to see above water.

Have fun!

Long time no see! :)

I've not stayed at Divi Flamingo, but I have been to Bonaire about 6 times. It has some of the BEST shore diving on the planet.

We always stay at Buddy Dive. Not only can you get the "Dive n Drive" package at a very reasonable price, but their staff are very friendly. They also have a very neat "drive through" fill station for air AND nitrox. BTW, the package includes a full buffet breakfast.

That's why I'm puzzled as to why you wouldn't be renting a vehicle. Basically, you drive around the island until you see a yellow rock: that marks a dive site. Then you gear up & get in the water.

Although some dive site access is a little more difficult, an experienced diver such as yourself should have little, if any, problems.

To be honest, I've never really found it necessary to boat dive. Maybe in the future I might do one or two off Klein Bonaire, but for the most part, I'll stick to diving from the shore. It's just so much easier!

Email me. :)

I haven't stayed at Divi so I can't speak for the rooms but I have been on the grounds and dived with them. They cater to groups and take their boats to sites that are better dived from shore. They also limit the bottom time. They have great pricing, for example: 3 boat dives and unlimited air for $66 (all on one day).

The best thing about Divi has to be the location: you're a short walk from town and there are two other good dive shops/hotels nearby.

On the way to town there's Dive Inn. The accomodations are pretty basic but people are social. I stayed there recently and we had several people staying at Divi drop by looking for buddies. There's also Carib Inn which is a short walk from Divi. I can't speak for the accomodations or the diving but the people in the dive shop are great. I had a freeflowing regulator adjusted there for free and it seems that most dive shops send people who need repairs to Carib Inn.

It's going to be really tough to enjoy Bonaire without a car but if you are traveling alone you'll need a buddy anyway. I think staying at Divi is not a bad idea but I recommend dropping by Dive Inn to see if you can get your fills there and find someone to dive with.

Don't expect much pampering in Bonaire!

Hope this helps.

Problem is I travel alone, but don't dive solo

Renting a car would probably mean having an international driving license, which I don't, and I'd rather not go around looking for a buddy not really knowing what I'm in for.

I don't mind shore diving, but I do appreciate guided dives.

I'll have a look at the shops you mentioned if they have an internet site and hopefully the agency will come up with some solution or other.

chiara once bubbled...

Actually, no. Your Belgian license is all you need, as long as you're 23 at least and have had your license for 2 years.

(Can only speak for AB Carrental here, the specifics may vary per company)

My wife and I stayed at Divi in September and could not have been happier and can't imagine a better experience.

There IS a very nice sandy beach there. When we weren't in the water, we were on the water. And, they have a huge float out a ways from the shore for sunning, diving (not SCUBA), etc.

We had the ocean "deluxe" room -- part of our $777 package. It was more than adequate -- two double beds, a.c., nice balcony, from which you could look straight down into the water and watch the fish.

Chibi-Chibi restaurant was handy and had good food -- about the same prices as elsewhere in town. Their buffet breakfast in the morning has anything you could want.

There is a casino, but we didn't go there, so can't say what it's like. Also a small gift shop. And a beachside palapa for beer, towels, swimming floats, etc.

The dive operation was first class, as were the boats. We did six days of boat dives, and only went to one place twice. They schedule the next day's boats a day ahead of time, and if there's a location that everybody wants to go to, and if the conditions are right, they'll go there.

The skippers and guides were very helpful and informative and super-friendly. And they always found the right stuff -- seahorses, frogfish, turtles, etc.

They do not limit your bottom time, other that to suggest a max depth and time for each dive, but then qualify it by saying if you're diving with a computer or nitrox, just to dive safely.

I think the best, though, was the staff -- from the maids to the waiters to the reception staff to the gardeners -- everybody. Everybody must have taken a customer service class, or else are just friendly and helpful by their Bonaire nature! And, as I said, the dive staff were #1 (although, in honesty, we haven't stayed anywhere else on Bonaire, so can't say others on the island aren't just the same).

Hope this helps. PM me if you want more info.

Forgot to mention that we did a fair number of dives at Klein Bonaire. One a Hilma Hooker. They did only one or two locations that could easily be reached from shore, and that was due to windy and choppy conditions.

I believe they also have the owrld's largest outdoor rinse tank also used as a swimming pool.

Any Casino without competition is best avoided.

You can get breakfast at any numer of local empanada and coffee stands that are but 3 minutes walk East (away from the shore).

The place has all of the benefits of being near town with all of the plusses of being at any resort further North and farther away. The shore dives offered at thos other resorts were no great shakes, but access to any shore location for easy night dives is a plus- DF is just as good as any for that purpose.

I agree, tho- rent a car and shore dive.

They do have two pools.

Boats all have camera buckets.

Dock has large storage shed (locked at night) for gear storage.

Multiple fresh-water rinse tanks on the dock -- two for general gear, one for reg's and one for camera's.

Tons of full tanks for shore diving -- just grab 'n go. The house reef is so-so.

We considered renting a car, but are glad we didn't. The boat dives were just right for us. Two-tank boat in the morning -- leave at 8:15, back by noon. Afternoon boat was 2:00 and back by 4:00.

This was our first trip to Bonaire, and I suppose, after a few years, we would want to see new territory and rent a car, but just didn't want the expense and hassle this time.
