Despite some pretty sub optimal conditions I really wanted to get in the water so I grabbed a 5/3 hooded vest to go under my 3mm and went to the Destin Jetty for the first dive of the year. It was overcast, the pass was churned up and just general bad visibility around 8' probably. I left my strobe at home assuming if I took many pictures I shouldn't expect too much and I wanted to haul as little gear as possible during the "death march", the long walk from the parking lot.

I ended up getting a few shots that were not too shabby using macro mode and the internal flash. The key with the internal flash though is being very close, any further than about a foot and it would be backscatter, reflections and garbage.

Even in low light conditions at about 40-50 feet the tg-4 can do pretty good, the auto focus struggled a bit and lots of pictures were out of focus but hard to complain considering the conditions.

Wow, your images are actually remarkable considering the on camera flash and turbid vis. Even being close, I would have expected more backscatter in the conditions you describe. Cool!

Thanks!

Here's my dive buddies at 18' at our safety stop...

I backed up just far enough to squeeze them both in the pic... haha, def some poor conditions, but a fun dive anyway!

Yes poor conditions does not always = bad dive. I did a wreck dive in 25m outside of Sydney a few years back and the viz was about 1m. It forced me to look closely to see anything at all and I had a great dive. After I surfaced the other 7 divers were annoyed as they had pulled out after 10-15mins and sat in the boat waiting for me to come up. They thought I was BSing them regarding the great dive I had.

We don't look hard enough in good viz because we don't have to.
