TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WCIV) — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 65-year-old diver on Wednesday night, about 20 miles southeast off St. Catherine's Sound in Georgia.

Officials said they received a medavac request at 10:48 a.m. from a 25-foot vessel.

They used a helicopter crew to lower a rescue swimmer down to the boat to help a unresponsive 65-year-old man. People on the boat said he experienced a diving accident.

“It is important for all boaters to have proper communications equipment to alert the Coast Guard in the event they have an emergency further offshore, said Chief Petty Officer Glenn Jimenez, the communications supervisor at Sector Charleston, “An operable VHF radio and properly registered EPIRB or PLB will alert Coast Guard authorities of your situation."

Based on the desciption it sounds like they may have been diving Grays reef marine sanctuary.
