    Key Largo Dive Ops Report

I'm just posting this for others who might search as I did before our trip, looking for recommendations for dive ops in Key Largo. We did three days of two-tank dives. All were on shallow reefs. Although I hear the deep wrecks are very nice, the shallow dives have short boat rides and only...

    Diving in Key Largo

Sabbath999 and I did some dives in Key Largo last week. We stuck to the shallow reefs because they require very little boat time -- only ten or fifteen minutes between two dives -- and we had some seasickness issues. I enjoyed it a lot -- the reefs are shallow, all less than 40 ft, many around...

    Freshwater dives in southern Florida

Hello folks, Sabbath999 and I are going to be coming south soon. The search function and your previous advice has given us some great ideas for salt water diving -- Thanks! We would also like to spend a day in fresh water before coming home. No better way to soak the equipment, right...

    Manatees near the Panhandle?

I would never sign up for one of those _silly_ PADI classes! (Wanna see my Oriskany Diver card? :) ) I'd love to hear about the cavern dive. We plan to put some bottom time in on caverns this trip!

    Manatees near the Panhandle?

I wasn't aware, so thanks! It seems one just contacts one of the dive shops in Crystal River or Homosassa to arrange a snorkel tour then? Any suggestions on operators?

    Manatees near the Panhandle?

Hi folks! Sabbath and I are planning a trip to do some cavern diving on the Panhandle later this month. We'd love to visit with some manatees; but we don't want to do any more additional driving than we need to to do that. So what spots would be good for manatees that are more...

Morrison Spring and a little narcosis

Sure they can....until something goes wrong, or that little switch in their head that says "oi, I can't see the light!" flips. I didn't go as far as the Ballroom, but I went as far as my cavern cert's specifications would take me in Ginnie. It wasn't tight, and I don't see the vis going away...

    Riding marine life

I find it even more interesting how people deny the possibility that animals have emotions and sensibilities. Certainly other animals don't begin to approach human mental capacity in areas such as reasoning, projecting outcomes, or abstractions. But emotions and feelings don't require such...

    Cave diver? Cavern diver? certifications

I can address this one just a bit... We're talking to an NSS-CDS instructor about doing Intro to Cave. We're PADI certified, but with him we're going to 'redo' the cavern certification because the NSS-CDS course will teach us a few additional things we should have before Intro to Cave...

    Help!

I've little direct help to offer --- but have you called DAN? (The Divers Alert Network). I hope you're a member, but even if you aren't they'll offer more useful advice than any other source I know of.

    Cave diver? Cavern diver? certifications

Those sites are the best source for the official word, so I'll just add some personal observation... Sabbath and I did Cavern with PADI this spring. We read the manual, watched the video, spent one weekend on coursework and equipment configurations. There was a couple of hours of dry land...

    Finally! (a dry suit story)

I've gotten perhaps twenty dives total in a drysuit so far, and I'd never been anywhere near as comfortable as in a wetsuit. I felt I was always struggling with my trim and could never just relax and be horizontal. Yesterday the first five minutes was like that, but I suddenly found it -- my...

    Diving and Ironman training?

I often dive and cycle on the same day -- but the more nitrogen loaded I am/will be (the closer to the NDL) the bigger time gap and more gently I ride. For shallow diving my reading indicated regular training should be ok after a few hours.

    Are you a dive snob?

I had a guy at Ginnie come up and tell me 'they'd throw me out for taking a light into those caves'. I just let him know I'm cavern certified so they wouldn't. I'm not sure if he was driven by concern or by annoyance at seeing someone on a single coming out of the cavern. (I didn't go into...

    First night dive tonight.

Also watch the plankton swimming in your light beam. Very cool. :)

    My dive buddy startles me.

Also, if you keep where you can see each other well, you won't be so easy to startle...and it would be a good idea for other reasons, yes?

Rendering Assistance - Good Samaritan Laws

I buy umbrella liability and don't worry about it further. I can't be worrying about such caca when someone may need assistance.

Short Plus Sized Woman Needs BC Advice!

If you're not happy with the Zenas and look at BP/W (yay, by the way :D ), I'd like to point out that DiveRite, OxyCheq, and Deep Sea Supply all have short backplates. Much more comfortable on my 5'4" frame.

My Dive Knife Is Bigger Than Your Dive Knife!

I carry EMT shears, as my most likely risks are lines of various description and perhaps the need to cut webbing. One big bonus of these is that I can carry them at my waist. Isn't it a problem to carry a tool as a hedge against entrapment then carry it way down your leg -- where it might be...
