For all the nitty gritty details of why a strobe is best in most (almost all) situations for photo we did a video and article on this as it is one of the top questions we face on an everyday basis. Hope this clears up all the details on why a strobe is better.
Strobes vs. Video Lights for...
You are correct, I am the CEO of Backscatter... 😃
You are also correct about the way the remote feature works with 2 MF-2 strobes.
You are correct that if strobe A is a MF-1 and strobe B is MF-2 with the light pipe, you can put both in manual mode and A will trigger B, the caveat being that...
You could use the MF-1 as the "main" strobe to trigger a remotely placed MF-2, but you would not be able to remotely send power level signals to the MF-2. You would have to turn the power dial on the remote strobe. You need 2 MF-2's is you want to transmit a power level change.
You are correct here.
They are not exactly interchangeable.
A guide number (GN) consists of a shutter speed and ISO to come up with the GN. Since flash is faster than shutter speed (in general of course) the shutter speed doesn't really matter when making that measurement with a light meter...
Watt seconds is a measure of electrical energy. GN is a measure of light. While one could say a higher watt second rating would generally mean a brighter flash and higher GN, you can't make a direct comparison as there are so many other factors such a reflector design, beam angle, and other...
Just want to add in some thoughts I had after reading this thread, there's plenty of great ideas here!
As far as how to "store" all this stuff underwater, I use double end clips for everything and clip it to my BC. Personally, I hate the lanyards, it just gets in the way. But people want...
Just a last minute reminder to everyone if you want to use any camera demo gear, please bring SD cards for everything except GoPro, which will take microSD cards.
Thanks and see everyone soon!
Jim
Class 10 with U3 are the recommended ones. U1 will work but aren't nearly as fast and may not be able to keep up with some video specs like 4K on some cameras. To really be future proof get a UHS-II card. This card can be identified by the second row of pins on the card. This supports the...
Hi Dizzi Lizzi,
Well it's nice to know I'll have at least 2,000,001 questions at the event! :yeahbaby:
I advocate bringing all the photo gear you have. Cameras + water + diving + travel = something will go wrong eventually. Always good to have backups and you never know when on where you might...
Hi Debbie,
While I have not shot that particular setup before, we can figure it out. That's basically my day job is figuring out how to best shoot something underwater. Some cameras due to lighting or lens or other features may have some limitations on the types of shots you will be able to...
Hi Jane,
I can definitely help you out with that, I've shot and reviewed all 3 of those cameras underwater before.
I'll be available as much as the rest of the crew is willing to share me. :acclaim:
Hey Everyone!
Jim from Backscatter here and I’m really looking forward meeting everyone at the Surge!
I’ll be teaching underwater photography classes, helping with camera setup questions, image critique reviews, and bringing along demo gear for anyone who wants to try it out.
I’ll be teaching...
Hi Colin,
At this time I don't know exactly what I'll be brining. I know that I will have a number of Olympus cameras and GoPro setups, and will have a couple of higher end pieces as well. Not sure if I will have the G7x2 with me. But it would be a good idea if you were interested in a new...
Of course I'll be bringing tons of gear for everyone to shoot. The first hit is always free... :)
Except for GoPro most everything else is taking the full size SD card. Some cameras prefer the newer spec Speed Class 10 with UHS Speed Class 3. The UHS Speed Class 3 is required for most 4K video...
