What things in diving give you the willies?

The Great Blue Hole. As a new diver, there are still a lot of things that make me nervous or give me pause, but that place gives me the willies. I've never been, and I've heard it's a neat place to dive, but just pictures of it makes my skin crawl.

    My OB/GYN is a diver!

I thought you other dive gals would appreciate this. Turns out my new OB/GYN is a scuba diver. We spent the whole time (not devoted to medical history, etc) swapping dive stories. It was the most fun I've ever had during an annual exam! LOL

My review of the Suunto Zoop

Thank you! I'm looking at getting a computer in the next few months and I'm between thins one and the Mares Puck. Leaning toward the Suunto after reading this.

    Things you've found under water

I only have 8 dives, so hopefully I'll have plenty of great "what I found diving" stories in years to come. It's not much, but during my checkout dives I did find a weight pocket (and weights) that had been lost by a student three months prior. It did make me feel kind of giddy that I spotted...

    Dumb Things I've Done

I've really enjoyed this thread, although I can't think of anything I've done to add to it. I only have 8 dives, so any dumb things I've done I'm too new to realize it. :P

    How you met scuba diving

When I was 13, I took a trip to Washington state with my grandparents to visit relatives. My uncle was working at a dive shop and asked if we wanted to get certified while we were there. One day of classroom and the next of pool time later, and we were in the ocean. It was amazing! I had...

    Mask skills

I was really worried about that one also, since I have NEVER been able to go under water without plugging my nose. I always got water up it, no matter what. But our instructor told us to lean slightly forward an tilt your head just a tiny bit to the side. That way, the bubbles coming out of...

    New diver first boat dive

I don't have any tips to add, but I want to thank you for starting this thread. I also will be going on my first boat dive soon and, while I had been told most of this in class, it was good to read through it again. There were things I had forgotten.

    What have you seen?

I've only had two dives and both were cold water, so I don't have stories of sharks and such. Still though, on my first dive, my buddy and I were following two other divers and a bass got in between the two groups. It just swam along with us like that for a good 3 or 4 minutes, like we were a...

How Often Do You Abort Dives?

I've aborted exactly 0% of my dives... But then, I only have two dives after OW and both went well. lol I wouldn't hesitate to abort a dive if I felt I needed to though. Or maybe I should say I won't hesitate when I feel I need to, because I'm sure it will happen.

    Government Regulation

My original thought was more along the lines of "I wonder how many divers have to kill themselves doing something stupid before someone decides it's too dangerous to leave self-regulated?" Or, to put it more bluntly, who's going to ruin things for everyone else?

    Government Regulation

I was the poster who brought up the idea in the other thread. It's an ongoing discussion I have with my husband, who is training for his pilot's license. If enough accidents happen, you never know if some politician is going to latch onto it, as someone mentioned above. I can see it being...

Deaths at Eagles Nest - Homosassa FL

The thing that angers me about these types of accidents is that it gives people the wrong idea about scuba and scuba divers. Or maybe I should say a skewed idea. I've had many conversations about this with my husband, who is training for his pilot's license. He gets very mad when he hears...

    Bursting SPG

I just took Open Water last August (PADI) and I was taught to turn the SPG down so the face pointed at the ground and turn the air on slowly.

This years analysis and next years aspirations ...

This year: I got certified! After wanting to for the last 20 years. Also found a wonderful dive group that meets regularly. (just too bad they are a 2 hour drive away) Carved a pumpkin in 30' of fairly cold water the last weekend of October. Found a great deal on a BCD. Next year: Go...

Mike's DCS And Some Lessons Learned

Thank you for sharing this. As a new diver, I'm always on the lookout for stories I can learn from and this is one of them. I am the "wait and see" kind of person in most things, and I know logically that after diving that's not a good idea, but sometimes logic doesn't win. I'm sorry this...

10 scuba diving myths - what's your take?

    1. It depends. You don't need to get the most expensive gear or travel the world. Plus, if you figure that you spend nearly $1,000 a year on cable (if your is around $80 like mine), it doesn't seem quite as expensive anymore. I'd rather DO something than sit in front of the TV. 2. It can...

    Happy Underwater Halloween!

That looks like fun! We didn't have a costume party, but we did have an underwater pumpkin carving contest.

My wife has a problems with leaking masks...

I'm under the impression that masks will always leak when you smile. If you look in a mirror and smile, you'll see that your whole face moves, which will break the seal of even the best fitting mask. At least, that's what I've been told, I could be wrong. I just go ahead and smile... then...
