@Philosopher King what you probably saw was a Harvestfish, Peprilus paru, as they occur all along our eastern seaboard and into the Gulf of Mexico, look very much like a Mono at first glance and as you stated, Monos don't live here.
I don't have the filters or muck stick, but I do use the snoot. I use a large o-ring instead of a rubber band and replace the supplied lanyard strings with something heavier. I only take the snoot if I plan to use it, not every dive. Dive Rite make a nice thigh pocket you could use for the...
As a self described algae nerd these two field guides have served me well:
Marine Plants of the Caribbean Littler, D&M, Bucher, K & Norris J Smithsonian Inst./Airlife 1989 1-85310-084-6 and
Pacific Seaweeds Druehl, Louis Harbour Publishing 2007 978-1-55017-240-9

I left no trace. I too pick up trash, and shells. I have not prohibited any diver from enjoying a species of shell that I have collected as other individuals of that species are still in the area. I also have introduced a lot of non divers to the natural history of gastropods and malacology...
I too am a collector and take live mollusks. At one time I used to boil the shell to clean it, but that method often leaves hairline cracks on the surface. I have found that by placing the animal in a pan or ziplock bag and completely covering it with water then completely freezing and thawing...
I bought a pair of Seawing Novas in about 2009 or 10 and this summer on a trip to Mexico, just before the last dive of the trip, the guide brought to my attention that one of the hinges had cracked; it was just myself and the guide so there were no spare fins to use, the fin failed about a third...
