A couple years ago when I was snorkeling in the island of Koh Kood I noticed a curious thing, I found an octopus and a longfin grouper sticking together at all times. Has anyone seen behaviour like this?
I filmed them around the reef and no matter what the grouper would always stay close to...
The Wikipedia page I referred to linked to this graphic:
Those are tourists deaths, I think they put in that category anyone who dies on a tourist visa while in Thailand. The discrepancy with your figure is probably because it counts all the deaths of Australians in Thailand including...
The Danish language page for Koh Tao has some statistics using 2016 figures, on that year 228 tourists out of 36 million visitors died while visiting Thailand, this is 0.64 deaths per 100.000 tourists. From the same page, Koh Tao receives 500.000 tourist so based on that average 3 deaths a year...
I've been following what is behind this "Death Island" nonsense for years, it's basically a hoax by people with a vendetta against the place or using it as a vehicle for public attention.
Primarily is pushed by three people using the Samui Times website to push conspiracy theories, gain public...
Alright, embedding doesn't work (boo-hoo), here's another one in need of ID. Small, about, perhaps, 30cm in height, shallow water, also at the same location as the previous one.
Coral by CaptainObvious - 3D model
I made a few test 3d scanning corals in situ, off the coast of small island in the Gulf of Thailand, I just uploaded one of the 3D scans and I was a little stumped when I tried to name it, I think it's a member of the Pavona genus; any ideas?
I'll see if I can embed the 3D scan here, if not...
Last weekend I flooded my Inon S-2000, forgot the O-Ring... whoooops...
Even though water got to the electronics I successfully cleaned it up and it's working normally; however I noticed that there is a crack in the clear port, at the top where it projects a little. I don't know if that was...
A Thai friend of mine working for an NGO has shared some photos on his Facebook page,I see now that speedboats are going to the island and dropping anchor on the corals; that is another kettle of fish altogether and should be stopped ASAP.
The reefs around Koh Tachai were severely damaged by coral bleaching some years ago, that is what killed most of the shallow reefs. In my opinion the stress on the ecosystem from illegal fishing on the area is the reason why the recovery has been slow and in some areas non existent; algae has...
My girlfriend feels she needs a bit of practice before we go to the Philippines in a couple months so we thought of going to Koh Tao for a few days to do some diving. At first we thought of doing the usual thing and doing a 3 dive day tour but it occurred to me that it may be more convenient for...
I'll try to go back in June or July, when the islands are green.
A big yellow H would be nice, but it's that antenna mast I have unfinished business with...
(note to self: pack a hacksaw for the next liveaboard... :devious:)

Yes, I have goggles with live video, so I see what the...
I came back from Komodo three weeks ago after another liveaboard with Dive Komodo on the Tatawa, weather this time wasn't very good but it was an amazing experience once more. At Manta Alley we were treated with 30/40 mantas in one dive.
Of course I took my flying toys with me, unfortunately...
Don't forget to bring sea sickness pills, those boats roll a fair bit and if you are not used to it you'll go green. It's a good idea to take some as soon as you set sail, it takes some time for the medicine to have an effect so better safe than sorry.
Just a heads up, the TDEX dive expo will be at Queen Sirikit Convention Center in Bangkok until, I think, this Sunday.
Less stands than during previous years from what I've seen, but some interesting things to check out.
I don't think there's that much shelter at Tachai, isn't it? A speedboat can be beached and everyone goes on land, but a larger boat is in for a ride; specially dive boats, I always though they make them too top heavy here. I've been in a few that even with moderate weather lean 30 degrees or...
