    Chris Pruchnic

Chris was an open-water instructor at Denver Divers. He was also a superb athlete, and a member of the American Alpine Society. He passed on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Rocky Mountain National Park, while ice climbing. Chris had just completed his first 100-mile footrace, and loved to...

Dive tables take a back seat in SSI training

SSI has moved dive tables to the Appendix of the Open Water Diving manual, and given Instructors the option to not train with dive tables. As far as I know, the use of computers has not been mandated, however.

    SSI dive leader rate increase

I was a bit surprised to see the annual rate for an SSI DiveCon go from $55 last year, to $70 this year. A 27% increase in renewal rate in a bad economy seems a bit steep. :pirate2: I'm curious what the OWI rates are - I think they were $110 last year.

    diving vs. sport-fishing IRT Oriskany

I just want to preceed the following questions with a statement that I know a little bit about diving, and almost nothing about fishing. When searching the Internet for information about diving the Oriskany, I come across some sites stating good diving, and at least one site proclaiming the...

    Slime on wetsuit

I just got a new Excel 4/3 Infiniti wetsuit and spent last week in Fiji diving it. It's a great suit - warm and comfortable. But I noticed that it gave me a bit of a rash on both shoulders by the end of the week. I washed the suit (part of my normal after-trip ritual, using McNett Aquaseal...

    week-long dive profiles

I live in a land-locked state, so most of my diving is week-long or weekend trips to the Carribean. When I first started diving, my mentor was the LDSO, who told me that a good dive profile for a week of diving is: Deepest dives at the beginning of the week (for instance, 100 feet on Monday)...

    Kevlar (aramid) fishing line

I was talking to a local DM in the Keys, and he stated that a newer type of fising line is becoming more popular and may pose a greater risk to divers. A newer category of line, sometimes called "superline", which is made of advanced materials, such as Kevlar (aramid), but also spectra or other...

    Comfybite and DIR?

Well, I don't have a comfybite, but I do have a seacure, and I've gotten used to it. It definitely helps keep my jaw from getting cramped on rec dives. How do custom mouthpieces fit into the DIR philosophy? I know the primary with long hose is passed. For me, that would also mean the reg...

    DIR equipment: computers?

Sorry if this is a repost: I read a lot of FAQs and did some searching here, but didn't find anything. I'm an SSI diver (DiveCon), but have become interested in DIR diving. I've read some things on equipment, but I don't see anything about dive computers. Do DIR divers shun computers? Does...
