    Your biggest "lessons learned"

At the end of a 35m dive just as i was deploying my SMB a diver had a BC problem and began a uncontrolled ascent. I managed to grab their leg flair, dump my air and signal them to dump air, but id did not let go I got disorientated in a cloud of bubbles from the over expansion valve on the...

Be weary of seven gill sharks !

In South Africa at the Cape Ton Dive Festival2014 there was an indecent where a juvenile male 7 gill shark bit a diver on the shoulder. the shark reportedly showed aggressive behavior from the start of the dive and circled the buddy team 4 times before biting. This is the only indecent in Cape...

    BCD advise

Pro HD From Aqualung is a great simple BC from Aqualung. In my experience through, I would definitely consider the Pearl from Aqualung because it was designed with woman in mind. That means that it is scalloped to fit womans hips and it also has support in the right places. I have found that...

    Regulator Washing / Concerns

I always wash my regs attached to a tank with positive pressure when i get home from the site. Just check your regs. if they are the Titan LX version they may have ACD (Auto Closure Device) in which case, you can use any of the recommended solutions with little effect on the reg first stage.

How Many Hours of class/instructor time should a well-run DM class take?

Thanks, Interesting post. As a DMT myself starting last week, I would say that my skill set is adequate to begin the course but certainly not at demonstration level. Mask clear and reg retrieval are simple skills to master, but the last time I took my equipment off underwater was for OW. So...

Reflections of a rescue diver newly minted

HELLO DIVER! HELLO, HELLO DIVER! ARE YOU OK? Well first off let me trot out a few of those time worn clichés that you hear because, for this course they apply. ... “This course will change the way you dive!” ... “Best course you will ever do” ... “This course is very rewarding!” (Read...

Deep Diving Risks for Divers 70 Years Old and Older.

Good question. There are a number of factors, the first being that as you mention i love diving in Smitswinkle bay 25-35m, as well as many other deep sites. I am willing to dive shallower depths however if the risk factor is higher with deep dives. Second is that my perception is that at depth...

Hi all, If you will permit me to give you a little background information first. We commonly dive in cold water 10-15 Cecilius (50-59F) limited viability 1-5m (3-16) being the norm. I usually buddy with my father who is now, you guessed 70, he has about 50 dives and is generally in good health...

Should I buy my own equipment???

In my opinion if you are looking to do AOW and Rescue you will be much more comfortable in kit that you are familiar with. with regard to travel, i think it is wise to at least buy your regulator (which can fly as hand luggage in South Africa) you will always know how it has been looked after. I...

Miss Scuba Manners....What's your unwritten dive etiquette rule?

You do a dive plan with an insta buddy, and agree on how the dive will go then they totally ignore the plan. Fortunately i very seldom dive with instabuddies.
