tinkering with the idea of sidemount for rec diving (cold and warm water)

I switched over to sidemount last year and prefer it to the twinset. Full redundancy, trims out nice and takes the weight of your back if you do a lot of shore diving. I dive lp 85 tanks so with healthy fills I can get some pretty long dives in.

What do Open water divers struggle with the most?

When I did open water I struggled with mask drills most. My instructor told me to go to the pool fill my mask then just walk around in waist deep water for a while. I've seen my ow instructor around and I'm sure he's surprised at how far I've come through sheer determination. I made a decision I...

New to cold water - overweight?

Definitely too much weight. I was diving that much with a drysuit and an Al 80. In a wetsuit you wouldn't even be close to 30 lbs

Would you dive with these tanks?

I don't think I'd hang around while they are being filled but if they are holding pressure then why not dive them. I have never heard of a steel tank exploding and all the failures of aluminum a I have heard of have been during fills.

Right side hose length for sidemount

I started diving sidemount in October last year an have been diving with 7' hose on right and short hose on necklace on left. It seems to be the way every one is trained here. Wondering if 7' is necessary or if 5' is enough. I'm diving open water, no caves or wreck penetration at this time so is...

A need to rehash our discussion on primary donate

I dive sidemount with short hose on bungee necklace in left and long hose on right. With the popularity of sidemount now I almost feel like different configurations should be discussed in OW so that newer divers have a better understanding for mixed teams. For me it seems simple that I always...

Looking for advice on where to get certified close to Langley BC

I did deep and nitrox with Paul and I like the staff it's just too far out of the way coming from Langley

    Nitrox: Should I be worried?

For nitric always analyze yourself or watch tank being analyzed, period. I have sold thanks to people with nitrox blends in them and have told them not to take my word for it but go to a shop and have it analyzed. I even have tanks analyzed when I have asked for air. I have heard stories of...

Looking for advice on where to get certified close to Langley BC

From Langley Ocean Quest in Burnaby is the easiest and most convenient. It's pretty much right on the way to dives sites and Greg and his staff are great. They also run Sat fun dives for certified divers so when you have completed training you can get out and get some more experience in the...

Safest locales for diving around the world?

Definitely drysuit diving year round. That being said it is awesome diving.

Safest locales for diving around the world?

Lots of great diving in Canada. British Columbia has a ton of sites, Great Lakes in Ontario if well preserved wrecks are your thing.

Old steels denied fills due to store "policy"

Around here no shop will fill aluminum tanks older that 25 and that goes back to the luxfer alloy issue from the 80s. A couple of them have extended that to steel as well, probably to try and sell people new steel tanks.

    Future Sidemounter

Agreed. I dive a Dive System sidemount BC and LP 85 tanks. A lot of people around here dive the x-deep and you'll see a few Razors as well. There are a lot of sidemount systems out there.

Start with 7mm or just get drysuit

Here on the west coast of Canada most shops bundle ow and drysuit together. I have been in a wetsuit once on a lake dive in the summer just to try it out. I did ow in a drysuit and honestly if you need 7mm wetsuit you might as well go dry.

Best diving computer on the Market

Shearwater. Well worth the , a great computer. I have the perdix, no ai, and have had no issues with it. And from what I hear if you do have a problem the customer service is top notch.

After your ow course, were you able to dive without Dm/instr?

I felt I could dive without DM or instructor although I wouldn't go out with another newb right out of ow. I did a lot of dives with experienced divers who had the patience to take out a newb and I really appreciated it. I wouldn't recommend 2 people fresh out of open water plan and execute a...

Warm Clothes under the Dry Suit

No to a wetsuit under the drysuit. I wear a merino wool baselayer and then my undergarment over that. I have two undergarments one the aqualung fusion and a Santi bz400 for when it's cold or I'm planning a long dive. When I did open water and drysuit the undergarment came with the rental so I...

    Redundant air with a drysuit

Pretty much everyone around where I live dives dry and I haven't seen anyone have an inflator whip on a pony. As pointed out if you are going to pony the dive is over and you are ascending and on surface you would orally inflate BCD for bouyancy.

    LP 85s for sidemount

I started sidemount diving a few months ago and have been using LP 85s. I now have two pairs, one 17 years old with the sprayed on glavanized finish that I've been diving regularly and a newer pair I picked up today that are Blue Steel. Having a hard time finding out about bouyancy difference...

    Testing a Spare Air

Before I went sidemount I carried a pony. I had a 30cf pony and then a 40. I never had to use it but I dive solo so I consider redundant gas my buddy. In terms of size I settled on 30 becase it would be enough gas to get me safely back to surface with gas to spare. I carried it buddy diving as...
