    Charity Spear Fishing Tournament

I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up about a new spear fishing tournament this year. The annual "Fishing for Families" tournament that benefits the Pensacola Ronald McDonald house has added a spear fishing category. It will be held July 16th with three categories (grouper, flounder, red...

    Dive Report: USS Oriskany 04-20-2010

I have yet to dive the O, usually looks too crowded for my tastes. Maybe I will have to take a day off of work and try it out soon.

    Vortex Incident

When I was certified I was taught to buddy breathe. If a student panics during any step in the training there can be serious consequences.

    Vortex Incident

Thank you for the update, that is relatively good news. It was a bad scene witht that much family present. I will say that all present divers and Vortex personel responded quickly and professionally.

    Vortex Incident

Does anyone have any information on the diver who surfaced unconscious at Vortex Saturday? All I know is that he was breathing on his own (very weak), and left by chopper. Any update on accident cause and condition of diver would be appreciated.

    Spearfishing

Funny thing, Dixie Diving didn't even ask about a powerhead in his original post........:-)

    Spearfishing

I spearfish, and yes, I carry a powerhead. I have no intention of using it unless I absolutley have to. I have a had several shark encounters, but have never felt the need to kill one. That being said, I will not spear without carrying a powerhead. Just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

    Pete's Tide Dive

I always keep a handheld (GPS & radio) and printed numbers as a backup. It may save the day should your primary crash.

    Accident on the "O"

I was out diving today when the call you hate to hear came across the radio. A dive boat was radioing the Coast Guard asking for help - unconscious diver, bleeding from lung, no pulse. It was a sad day on the water. Everyone please be safe, it is a fun sport, but not without hazards.

    Where O' Where

Gas up the boat, call some friends, and hit the rigs/wrecks that are far offshore........

    Pelican Tank Rack

I run 3 to 4 racks on my boat depending on the number of divers. First thing to do is weave some anchor rope in and out of wire on the bottom. This will keep it from marking up your boat floor or truck bed. If you dive aluminum 80s, they will rattle like crazy is choppy seas. A cheap and easy...

Report - Out of Orange Beach 9/26

I have taken some AJ off the Allen before, everytime I have been there the viz was less than stellar. I hit the Sparkman Liberty ship Sunday and it had a few fish (speared the only AJ I saw), but nothing to write home about.

    Insurance

Just curious to see if anyone has life insurance that covers diving. If so, who do you have it through? A lot of policies exlude "extreme sports" such as diving. Thanks!

    Opinions on Dive Boat Types?

My last boat was a Wellcraft. I think they are solid boats for the money. Mine road well and I never had a major problem out of it (just superficial topside gelcoat cracks). Unless you really know how to inspect a boat, a survey is always a good idea.

    Opinions on Dive Boat Types?

I had a bow rider and went to a "dive boat". After a lot of research and several test rides I went with a Grady White. Gradys have a patented hull (SeaVee2). Steep deadrise at the bow and tapers at the back for better roll control. If you can find a deal on one, I would highly recommend looking...

    Rail Guns

I am anxious to see the new woody elite. I have the older version 38 Special and love the gun. I may have to upgrade to one of the new sawed off magnums!
