PDC vs COZ for OW Certification

There hasn't been any sargassum for several weeks now... Personally, I find Playa to be a better place (not just because this is where I work). Currents are generally milder in Playa, which will allow you to focus on properly learning to dive rather than trying to fight a current. While...

    How common is this?

I puked a little the first time I saw the video... even left a sarcastic comment stating that the "instructor" demonstrated great trim, buoyancy, etc., but the video poster didn't get my sarcasm... It's beyond me how any tech instructor (or frankly any instructor) would be anchored to the...

Importance of back kick in Cave Diving?

I would... proper trim, buoyancy and mastering different methods of propulsion are required by standards, so yeah... besides, why would I or any other instructor send someone out into the world without them fully knowing their stuff...

Side mount gave me tennis elbow...what now?

I had a partial bicep tear from taking a tank from the bed of my truck down during a cave course. Being an active and full time cave/sm/tech instructor, obviously I didn't follow what the Dr. said (take it easy, rest it for several weeks, etc), but did do my physio, and the pain mostly went away...

Best Dive Destination For Wreck, Cave and Deep Tech Diving

You are right!! My apologies! Don't know what I was thinking, as most of my dives in the GL were on the Canadian side!

Cenotes near Tulum/Playa: The Pit vs Angelita

In my opinion, The Pit is a far greater dive than Angelita. You have the H2S cloud, awesome beams of light penetrating the water, great formations, etc... Whereas Angelita has no formations, and nothing more than the H2S cloud and a small swimthrough..

Best Dive Destination For Wreck, Cave and Deep Tech Diving

For cave diving (and even deep technical dives), I would suggest Playa del Carmen. Not just because that's where I live and teach, but having dived in the caves in NoFla many times in the past, they don't hold a candle to our caves. As far as wreck diving goes, the Great Lakes has fantastic...

    Future Sidemounter

There are so many different rigs it is almost impossible to say x,y or z is the best... Personally, I use a Razor, but have also used the X-Deep (tec wing) on several occasions, and it's a very solid, well built rig. Either one of them will handle aluminum tanks or steels. On my razor I have...

Is there a time limit after classroom and pool.

Personally, I wouldn't take a student for their open water dives after 14 months (even if it wasn't a referral) without first doing a thorough assessment of theory and in-water skills. Even after a couple of months, it has been my experience (from students that have been referred to my shop)...

How many dive cylinders do you currently own ? [Poll]

    12 Al80 (for sidemount -6 sets), 6 sets of Al80 doubles, 6 Al80 (currently filled with 50%O2), 6 Al40 (100% O2), 20 Al80 singles, 1 set steel HP130 doubles, 1set steel HP119 doubles, 2 steel LP72 singles. but then again, I do own a dive shop...

    Sidemount Equipment Advice

If you don't think you'll get proper and/or quality training through your local dive shop, then don't do the training with them. As a cave and sidemount instructor, when someone comes to me having done a sub-par "course" the amount of remedial work we have to do is usually the same if not more...

Playa del Carmen / Tulum / Cozumel in September/October

Hey Sally, people bash on the ocean diving in Playa because it isn't Cozumel. I guess being so close, people kind of expect it be the same, but it isn't. It never has been. Playa has never had the majestic coral walls, and coral formations that Cozumel has. However, there's just tons of life...

Intro to Tech, to make a better Rec?

I love teaching the TDI Intro to Tech course! it is a great course to take even if you never intend on going all the way into technical diving or into cave diving. It will make you a far better diver, with much better understanding on dive planning, will square away your buoyancy, trim...

Playa del Carmen / Tulum / Cozumel in September/October

Fortunately, the last hurricane that came through here was over 10 years ago (Wilma in 05 and Dean - to a lesser extent- in 07). Not to say that no hurricanes will come through this year or next year, but so far, we've been quite lucky. Despite what a lot of people say, there is some really...

    Razor Light Holder?

The Light Monkey is 2" i believe, and the others I use are 2.2 (give or take) I think. On those, I put some inner tubing to make it a bit higher since the bezel at the top around the glass is thicker and it was catching and scratching on my helmet, making it difficult to hook on and take off.
