I have a .5 mm Scubapro Pacific Steamer wetsuit that I ourchased for our OW class - for time in the pool.

I dive mostly New York freshwater and will be doing some Fla salt water soon, until we relocate there in several years. We use a full 7mm wetusit up here with 5mm boots, gloves and hoods.

My question is: Will this .5mm westit of of ANY use to me in the future in Florida or up here in New York in later summer - or would I be better of to sell it on Ebay and purchase a full 3mm westuit for Florida summers?

??

I've got one of those too!
It's been hanging in the back of my closet for over a year now.
It would be okay for Florida or Bahamas in summer, But I go late fall or early spring. Usually wear 3/2 or 5/3 fullsuit depending on the water temp, and how much diving we're doing.

It might be good under your 7 mil in cold water, it will help it slide on easier.

I'm hanging on to mine, it'll come in handy some day.

Nope - it'll be of no use to you at all - there or at anytime in Florida.

That said, how much will you sell if for? :D

The .5 mil is my suit of preference for much of the summer in the Gulf, and anytime in the lower Caribbean.

I do all my caribbean diving as well as summer in the TX gulf in my .5mm. My wife also has one but she is fairly cold blooded & usually goes with her 3mm. It provide good protection from scrapes & scratches and enough thermal protection without adding lead to the belt.

For those hardy souls who learn/dive mostly in cooler waters (such as I do in California, Monterey mostly), I'm not sure if we're just used to the cooler waters, but I find a .5mm is usually good for water temps 73 degrees and above. I recommend a beanie or some head cover as that is where your heat escapes the most. We dove in Florida in May, water temps were around 73-78, depending on depth and location (we hit the coast from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea all the way down to Key West).

I like the .5mm better than a skin as it does give a little more protection ... just in case you run into jellies or perhaps a minor accident with a rock (try to stay away from the coral!). Nicest part is that don't need as much weights as with the 7mm I usually have to use!

Enjoy,
Margaret
