In case you're interested to know more about the Whalesharks of Cenderawasih, here's 2 reports from Ocean Geographic Society's Photo Pro's Steve Jones (http://www.indocruises.com/download/Whale_Shark_Whispers.pdf) and Michael Aw (The Whale Sharks of Cenderawasih Bay | Diver Magazine).
I strongly believe that the fact that the Bagan Fishermen live in perfect harmony with these gentle giants and feed them their leftover fish and tourism starts to come in to interact with these animals is pretty much the only way to protect the Whalesharks of Cenderawasih Bay.
Feeding is not really the correct term actually and from reading some replies to this thread can be and is easily misunderstood... The Bagan Fishermen have been doing this for decades already and haven't just started it for the divers.
