I'm, a relatively new diver, about 35 dives, usually in warm Caribbean water, "resort" dives. The group dives I go on are usually pretty small, about 4 - 6 "guests" or so max per DM. The divers are usually just there on vacation, so we normally stay together...Nowhere near the experience levels of most ScubBoard members. We usually go down as a group, drift around as a group and come up when the first person reaches 1,000 PSI.

In my limited experience, when the DM knows you are new to diving they will keep an eye on you and your gas. Asking how much gas you have several times during the trip. Again, these are "resort" dives, could also be referred to as "valet" dives. As others have stated, they should go over this on shore at the pre-dive meeting.
