So came across this fella in the gulf this weekend. Looks like just a black sea urchin but had all these shells attached to it on the exterior. Are the shells by chance or design? I assumed designed since there were a lot of them. Sorry for the quality and date. I have never been a photographer but am trying to learn.

Yes. They attach them using their tube feet to move them up their bodies from the sea floor. It acts as protection and camouflage from predators.
