One of the many benefits of "citizen scientists" is that those same citizens can also become strong advocates for preservation of habitats, species, and continued (or, better yet, increased) funding for science writ large. Their advocacy activities can take part in their workplaces, among their friends, neighbors, and loved ones, and by communication with their elected officials to help educate their fellow citizens on the importance of biodiversity conservation and research.

We should also note that this applies to terrestrial habitats and fauna and flora.
