Atlantis Azores Captain’s Log November 1 - 7, 2014
Bohol Itinerary

This week’s adventure starred the Aqua Hut team from Ohio, USA. An excitable bunch that was looking forward to ‘The Best Trip Ever’! With water temperatures over 84 F degrees, calm seas and sunny skies, we were off to a great start. Our first stop was snorkeling with the whale sharks at Oslob, which is a wonderful and amazing experience. Then off we went to the walls and coral gardens of Sumilon Island. This area is one of the first marine preserves of the Philippines and it provides an excellent introduction to diving in the Bohol area. Today, several black tip reef sharks came close by to check us out.

We then cruised up to Cabilao Island where the underworld is scattered with pristine coral gardens. Gigantic sea fans seem to cover every inch of the colorful wall and reef fish are everywhere that you look. Here we came upon the amazing Electric Clam! We were also graced with schools of banner fish and a sighting of the spectacular juvenile batfish.

Next stop we visited the seemingly endless mini-wall along the shores of Panglao Island. Today, our panga driver Obama led a group to the interior of Bohol Island on a land tour where they visited the tiny tarsiers, the Chocolate Hills, and stopped to admire the beautiful Butterfly Gardens. The rest of the “Iron Divers” carried on diving and were justly rewarded when DM Jess located one of the elusive, and extremely tiny, pygmy seahorses. The shore party returned from their road trip in time to view and enjoy a wonderful sunset at one of the many beach bars along Alona Beach.

With everyone back on board, we then headed to the picture postcard island of Balicasag. Countless turtle encounters were a huge hit as was being surrounded by an impressive school of barracuda. We also dropped in on the Giant Clam Farm before dropping over the spectacular wall at Balicasag where we got to see the massive school of resident jacks.

By popular request, the next morning we went back to revisit the whale sharks at Oslob - they are THAT cool! We then dried off and later toasted our awesome week back at the Atlantis Dumaguete where our guests enjoyed a Filipino buffet dinner. Afterwards the party went on well into the night!

We bid a fond farewell to the ‘Best Group Ever’ and look forward to their “return as a friend”. Thank you all for a wonderful week.
