It sounds like there won't be as many divers as usual this year... as they say, it's the economy (or lack thereof). The dive park should be open for diving although the restoration work being done on the Casino building has required two sets of scaffolding to be constructed around the building's perimeter so the space will be greatly restricted for some time to come.

Water temps last weekend were 57-59 F all the way down to 130 ft.

Rain or Shine, I'll be at step beach. :wink:

What kind of weather would it take to cancel the event? They are calling for possible t-storms Saturday.

It is a rain or shine event, but check with Catalina Express. One year it was canceled, but that had to do with a sewer issue in Avalon.

I am headed over tomorrow, so I may not get back online. Just a few thoughts:

1) Have a good time, come whatever;
2) Be careful (as always!); and
3) Listen to the dive briefing, particularly about harbor traffic and where to descend/ascend.

See you there...

Ah, I should have said conditions.

I knew it's a rain or shine event but thought I read somewhere it's up to the harbor master based on conditions. If the event has only been canceled once so far than there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Keep in mind that predictions of thunderstorms usually refer to the mainland. We don't get them very often here, in part because the elevation of the island is not sufficient to generate much upward movement of the air masses. I've dived in sunny conditions while watching thunderstorms on the mainland and even waterspouts over the Channel.

This will be the first year I've dived during the event in three years... I had bad colds during the last two. I'll be covering it underwater for one of our local papers. Already brought my donated DVDs and fliers down to SCUBA Luv for the raffle and participant bags.

Boo for the rain! I was really hoping it would be a nice day, especially with the incredible weather we had for the last week.

I understand it's a rain or shine event and it's rained on this day before. I guessing a lot of people won't show up for the event.. but anybody want clue us first timers what to expect on a cold, gloomy, rainy saturday morning? lol.

Let's hope you are right but one way or the other, I'm diving this weekend! See you there :wink:

Thanks drbill. I'm still vacillating on if I should bring a tank or rent one. My concern is availability of a rental tank with the throng of divers. I'd rather rent as it's one less piece of gear my wife has to carry for me.:shocked2:

Catalina Divers Supply said that they'll have 300 tanks at the event and it's doubtful that everyone will need a rental. Decisions, decisions.

Steve, Bring a tank. The weather forecast here is improving all the time. I think we will have a great time.
