My all time favorite is "Great picture; you must have a great camera", to which I usually reply, "I tend to think of it as the photographer behind the lens". How about you, what are your favorite backhanded compliments?

Cute kids; your wife must be very pretty.

I'll always take "He's smarter than he looks!"

especially at the card table, or contract negotiations table, etc.

hey Steve, I don't think back-handed compliment is the right term to use.

I'm guessing the person who said that probably wanted to compliment you on your photo, and is also genuinely curious about the equipment you use, which probably is a much better camera than they have.

you do have a great camera! :)

now those other 2 examples, those are back-handed compliments for sure :) especially vlads

Backhanded or not, imagine telling an artist, " Awesome painting, you must have great brushes..."

My personnel favorite "WOW, your camera takes great pictures" I actually received that one:D
