What is the best camera for good underwater wide angle shots?

Ideally, the camera could be used out of the water as well for tourist shots on dry land.

I have not decided whether to go with an amphibious camera or rather with a housing.

I do know that I want digital. I am not sure if an SLR is also necessary.

Please advise.

I think a DSLR would be your best option. Not only will you have an excellent topside camera, you will have an excellent u/w camera (once you get a housing of course). I think the wide variety of lens options is an excellent feature. Why not have a camera that can take excellent wide angle, but also excellent macro. I think the most satisfaction will come from the lack of shutter lag on the DSLR. Shutter lag is not fun, especially underwater when you are in a 2 knot current taking pictures of something moving in the opposite direction.

Good luck on your venture. Feel free to email me with any questions you have.
