For those planning a trip to Bonaire please book with a resort that supports the reef structure by not dumping their sewage into the ocean. This is a growing problem there and the Dutch government is taking very little action to prevent it. We were there last year ( our 5th visit) and noticed alot of brown algae on the reefs which is caused by pollution from some resorts. There are some very good threads on Bonaire Talk - The place to discuss everything and anything about Bonaire! detailing this problem.

I saw scattered patches (a square meter or so) of evil looking algae lat March, but only at southern sites, far away from resorts. Though on second thought not far from commercial shipping at the salt pier or perhaps dumping from cruise ships passing near the island.

The most startling thing I have seen develop is the decline of anemones. They were all over the place five years ago, but are few and far between now. Also the remaining examples are all small, lack color and appear almost shriveled.
