I guess what I looking at is:

2. I need something for a pony bottle.....
A: Yoke valves may, seem a little bulky on a pony bottle. ( a lot bulky to me)

3. Would it be less expensive to just but another set of Apeks at 299 then to have these serviced/rebuilt.
A:I don't thin so.

4. I did hook them up to a tank and they both seemed to "work fine." But I don't trust that.
A:That is the crux of your question.

5. Worth to me would be that if I could spend maybe 60-100 dollars per set and have a basic, decent of regs to use as a backup or to use with a pony bottle, then I would do it.
A: I don't have all the answers.

The first stage is a MR-12 which is a variant of the USD Conshelf. It's a good, reliable workhorse reg, I wouldn't hesitate to rebuild it and use it as a primary first stage.
