I have a 18 year old son who is showing an interest in wanting to dive with his Mom...Me !
When he was in the 1st grade he had a Mastoidectomy as a result of an infection within his brain. Is is possible for him to dive ? Should I go ahead and have him checked out by his ENT Doctor.
Appreciate your imput....Thanks, Donna

Donna...go to the experts...www.diversalertnetwork.com.
You can ask them any question and they are really good about getting back to you. The other option if you want face to face discussions....ask them where the nearest dive doc is to you.
Take care..Rich

Certain types of mastoidectomies can compromise the eustachian tube and this can interfere with ear clearing/equalization that is a normal part of all scuba. Fortunately, most childhood mastoidectomies involve a technique that generally poses little risk to the eustachian tube.

Of course, clearance to dive must come from an examining physician, and in the case of ear disorders preferably one that has some knowledge of diving medicine.

As RICHinNC has suggested, either you or the ENT can contact Divers Alert Network for more specific advice. DAN can be reached by phone at (919) 684-2948 (Mon thu Fri, 9AM - 5PM, EST) or e-mail at http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/contact/email.asp?RE=Medicine.

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Best regards.

PS: RICHinNC's enthusiasm notwithstanding, be aware that DAN's diving doctor referral list is extraordinarily meager in many areas of the country. In South Orange County you have a better chance than in many other regions, but if you come up dry perhaps this forum can be of additional assistance.
