Just two small points. First, Cousteau was diving a two-stage Cousteau-Gagnan DA Aqualung regulator (probably the French version), the predicessor of the DA Aquamaster, and not a single stage regulator in that photo. The hoses, which were molded together with the mouthpiece, are the give-away on this observation. It wasn't until later that the Cousteau team switched to the single stage Mistral regulator.
One other point, those are Churchill fins that Cousteau is wearing in that photo, after Owen Churchill, who invented them. Churchill fins are still available, and are being used by the lifeguards at the High Rocks cliff jumping and swimming area on the Clackamas River, near Gladstone, Oregon (just south of Portland, Oregon). Lifeguards and surfers love them as they can walk on land or on their surfboard with them. The round hole in the bottom was specifically designed by Owen Churchill to act like a suchion cup on a surface such as a surfboard. The Churchill swim fin patent explains it as, "...A hole or orifice 'l is disposed in the bottom of the central portion for drainage purposes and to provide a suction cup on flat surfaces..."
