I am probably going to to spend a week in Chuuk, or close to it, the first fill week of March 2007. I have not decided if I will do a live-aboard or land based, but I am leaning towards a live-aboard.

I'm a male, travelling alone, would either one of these be a better choice for someone in my position, or does it matter? Also, I am not a tech. diver, and would not want to do an extremely deep dives or difficult penetrations, if that matters.

I know the Thorafin offers partial weeks, but what about the Odyssey? Finally, on basic rates, the Thorfin is about $1K less, although since I will probably be diving nitrox, this will cut some of that difference, is the Odyssey worth $1K more than the Thorafin?

Thanks for any insight and/or info!

The Thorfinn is cheaper but not by that much.. Carefully take a look at what is included with each package.. 2006 prices don;t include meals, 2007 prices do but have other charges added.

Odyssey! Hands down. I've been on it 3 times and it is the only way to do Truk in my opinion. I've never been on the Thorfinn, but people I know who have did not like it. All dives are done from the Odyysey (no small boats) and they will rig you with doubles, a high Oxygen deco mix, and will let you dive solo.

We're booked on the Odyssey in 2008 (interesting to see that the week we're booked is now unavailable!), and chose it because the trip reports are consistently good to excellent. We also prefer to dive on our own schedule and pace from the mother ship, unlike the Thorfinn which is anchored in one spot and sends out skiffs which are on a schedule.

10 days now and counting for my second trip on the Odyssey!!

Jack

You're killing me Jack!! I was just excited that we were finally looking at less than 2 years before our FIRST voyage on Odyssey!!!

I've read your first trip report and your pictures ROCK! I hope your second trip is as good as your first one sounds :D :D :D

Ok, I'll post an updated report. It's going to be great to shoot in digital, see what i'm getting and shoot 50-60 RAW shots a dive!

BTW, they do have a skiff and will take divers to other sites or more advanced ones. I'm hoping to do a slightly different tour, but diving off the boat is such a luxury.

Oooh, thanks Jack! If it's 1/2 as good as your first report, I'm excited to read it already!! :D Can't wait to see your pictures too. :D
