I just don't log dives
I bought a set of used steel tanks. I'm told they are PSTs. They look like PSTs but I don't see any marking on them for sure. They were made in 98 and appear to have some kind of a finish on them. Galvanized or something maybe?

The last owner wrote there name on them. I want to remove it. Is there some kind of solvent I can use to do that that won't hurt the finish on the tanks?

If the finish is galvanized Acetone will not damage it.

I have used PSTs too (the gray finish is indeed galvanizing), and found that rubbing alcohol works well enough for sharpie marks. You can still make out some residual, but it's light enough where you can mark over it with your own name.

I'll get some rubbing alcohol and give it a try.

Trace the existing markings with dry-erase pen. This usually takes off permanent marker (it might take more than one tracing), but this marker then wipes off.
