ahhhh....... so me the newbee just found out that DAN can't write insurance in MD. I'm sure you all know this already, but its a new door to me. So where do MD divers flock to for diving insurance?

Also, I have Tricare Prime (retired) - I haven't called them yet on diver stuff. Has anyone done any research on Prime and can give me a quick leg up on info before I call them.

If you been mil, you know its often that you have to know more about the topic than the agency you are asking.

Thanks for any info.

Before I posted I was talking to DAN to convert my wifes and my student membership to family. When we did the address thing the DAN lady stopped and said they've asked to write policies in MD, but not been approved. She had no timing info, but it sounded like this has been on the docket for a while and all is quiet in Annapolis....

She basically agreed there was no reason to have a DAN membership if you cant get the insurance...at least she was nice about it.

Check out dive assure.

when DAN stopped covering the US virgin islands we had to switch to DAN world, which was a nightmare. I had to play phone tag with someone for 3 days just to ask a question about my policy.

we then moved to dive assure, they have been great so far, although we have not "needed" them yet.

I lived in MD and I have DAN for 3 years now.

Then you might want to give them a call. Would suck to pay your dues and insurance, get bent and sent to the chamber, come out and be given a $100k present all your own...

Where you live is all that matters with insurance - not where you use it.

Thats interesting!! They have been taking my money for insurance coverage for three years.

It would be interesting to know what changed. Previously DAN could write policies in MD and now they cannot. Either they changed the terms of the policies and could not get approval of MD insurance commission, or MD changed the rules.

Anyone know? Any MD insurance folks out there?

I'm insured in VA so it doesn't effect me-yet.

I sent a message to DAN and got a phone call from the CEO of DAN Holdings (the insurance side of DAN). DAN's insurance is group insurance. Due to an increase in the number of people getting together to claim "group insurance," which I guess requires more than there just be a "group," Maryland is requiring any organization that provides group insurance to submit some special form and the state is investigating any group insurance provider to make sure the group meets all the state's requirements. DAN submitted the form, but the state hasn't completed its tasks yet (no surprise there). Anyone with DAN insurance is absolutely covered. I'm left with the impression that the situation is not nearly as bad as this thread may indicate. The CEO did not mention that status of new memberships.

The call was to my home number and I wasn't home, so the CEO left the detailed message. I have it in .wav format and will post it if anyone asks (after I listen to it again to make sure there's no private info concerning my membership).

John
