I am told that the 1000 will not fit into the 800 housing because the lense is larger. Is that true?

I don't think that is correct. The cameras seem to me to be the same size. This myth (assuming I am correct and they are the same size) may be due to the 1000 being compatible with the wide angle lens, where the 800 is not.

The cameras are different and due to the change in the optics on the DC1000 - 5x zoom vs. 4x, the lens barrel has been changed. The DC1000 lens sticks out more then the DC800. So if you try to put a DC1000 into an 800 housing the lens will extend, hit the port glass and then retract turning off the camera.
