If you've never been to a site, the professional response is ALWAYS TAKE A LOCAL ORIENTATION DIVE WITH AN EXPERIENCED LOCAL DIVER.

If diving from shore start shallow and check depth consistent throughout the dive, on the first dive dive conservatively shallower than planned. On most shores the drop graduates though more quickly in some places, less in others. But your likely to stop wherever there is stuff to see, deeper doesn't mean better of course. MOST of the best diving in the world is shallower than 25 fsw.

Remember this simple rule - a profile of 40 ft for 40 minutes and 90 minute surface interval is a profile that could potentially be dove indefinitely without risk of Decompression Sickness (but unfortunately one must eat, sleep, procreate, and pass waste)

If diving from a boat - listen to the divemaster's instructions, if there is variety of options each at a different depth and location on the same anchor point - listen, decide what you want to see, and THEN plan your dive.
