Dave Freeman, a TV meteorologist in Wichita, KS, is the 2016 winner of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award. The award is the KAB’s highest honor, given for exemplary service to the community, state and broadcast industry. It also automatically earns Dave a spot in the KAB Hall of Fame.

Dave has been in broadcasting for nearly 41 years. He has served Kansans for more than 23 years on television, and has earned a number of professional distinctions. He is the 41st President of the National Weather Association and the only person ever to win NWA Broadcaster of the Year twice. He has earned a regional Emmy Award for environmental reporting, and has been part of a team honored with a national Edward R. Murrow Award. His efforts to help change the national criteria for severe thunderstorm warnings resulted in a special Public Service Award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He holds the TV Seals of Approval from both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.

Dave also strives to give back to the community and among those efforts is his involvement with Diveheart. Dave is a PADI Instructor Development Course Staff Instructor, and was attracted to Diveheart by the experiences of his youngest son, born with a rare form of spina bifida. Watching the effect that scuba diving had on his son motivated Dave to become a Diveheart Adaptive Scuba Instructor. Dave has served as a Diveheart volunteer, and also has trained other divers to serve as Adaptive Diving Buddies.
