Discovery orders gold-diving reality show from 'Deadliest Catch' producer | Inside TV | EW.com

I saw an announcement today that the concept of the Deadliest Catch is being taken underwater in a new show for the Discovery Channel, Bering Sea Gold. The show about a group of people who dredge for gold off Nome, Alaska will soon be on screens near you.

Before you grap your hooka and drysuit and book a ticket on Alaska Airlines to Nome, read Jack London, the poems of Robert Service, and Jon Krakauer's book "Into the Wild" about the Alaska environment and then add in the complication of going in underwater.

With the advent of the outdoor channels, there are a lot of shows, actually extended infomercials, about prospecting for gold in Alaska, including the area around Nome which once was the site of an Alaskan gold rush. Gold prospecting, especially in the form of panning or sluiceboxing can be fun. Given the price of gold it can also be profitable. Lots of gold pans adorn garages up here. One of the original dive shops, Alaska Mining and Diving in Anchorage, catered to those who sluicebox on the rivers of Alaska. That is a far cry from diving in the northern Bering Sea.

These shows could be fun. But the drama of prospecting on the frontier will not be enough. They will turn it into a weekly soap opera pitting team against team and losing the story in the process, just as it did on The Deadliest Catch.
