Friendly dive operation right above the sea at the 4 star Hotel Pestana Palms (very well run and friendly suite rooms overlooking the sea set in nicely manicured gardens) a little outside of the Funchal city center. 23 Eur for one dive with your own equipment. They offer free pick up service from nearby hotels. You can dive around rocky outcrops right in front of the hotel or go to the 376 hectare Garajau Nature Reserve. You can see dusky grouper, white sea bream, well camouflaged goat fish hiding in sand, moray eels and black sea urchins. There is also the wreck of SS Madeirense which sank south of Porto Santo Harbor in 2000. In mid December water temperature was 20C. Viz was 12 meters after two days of strong winds and rough seas. They can supply nitrox.
