I found airfare to la paz for $179 from IAH a couple days ago, so it looks like my designs on cozumel diving have taken a back seat to diving the sea of cortez. What dive operators should I consider in la paz? Are there any worth avoiding? My wife and I are new to the sport (~10 dives in the last year).

There are a number of different ones, since you are a little new to diving I would wait until you get there and speak with them in person and see what kind of service you can get. If you can meet the DM.

Main difference is going to be the size of the boat. The smaller shops dive off of 26 ft pangas mostly, the larger dive shops use 30-40 ft boats. They are more comfortable but have larger groups. All the diving in la Paz is day trips so boat comfort/bathroom may be a priority for you. Typical dive trips are 6-8 hours.

I strongly recommend Club Cantamar at La Paz

I went with my son for a whale watching tour and it was top notch from beginning to end.
As Trevor mentioned before, always good to have a look at the DM that will be with you but honestly they are good.
Also i could recommend you Daniel Ramirez Daniel Ramirez Valenzuela really good DM and instructor, you can look at FB for the comments from the people.
Have a great trip !
Ricardo
