Here is a little more abou Cayo Largo.
CAYO LARGO ENVIRONMENT: With the experience and enthusiasm of the Italian team carrying out the successful operation at Jardines de la Reina, a new project is now kicking off in Cayo Largo. Although this small island was already known as a diving destination, its value has never been recognized.
Cayo Largo is in the south central region of the Cuban archipelago, one of the last virgin spots left on the planet. Here, nature was prodigal in its gifts: beaches and more beaches in its 17 miles (27 km.) of length. But as if the surrounding fine white sands were not enough, Cayo Largo was blessed with being eternally caressed by clear, gentle waters of incredible shades of blue. When you finally arrive in Cayo Largo, you will be surprised to find a natural environment that has not practically changed at all since the world began. The bottom scenery is incredible around the coral reef that links the chain of islets along Cayo Largo, like an underwater bridge. You will find all your favorite water sports on this island. Scuba diving lovers will be amazed at the explosion of color in this underwater world. Cayo Largo owes its name to its elongated shape. Around 1494, Admiral Christopher Columbus stumbled on it during his second voyage to Cuba. It is also linked to the large gangs of pirates that used to roam the Caribbean Sea. On this islet, nature shares a well-kept secret: its coral reefs complemented by neighboring keys inhabited by numerous species of flora and fauna, including iguanas, pelicans and turtles.
Cayo Largo is a paradisiacal island, not yet flooded by mass tourism. Upon your arrival in the small international airport, you are immediately captured by this timeless haven. Here, you forget your watch; the day is just spent among unforgettable immersions, relaxing siestas on striking white-sand beaches and evening aperitifs at the Marina bar.
The Diving Center is located in the middle of the Marina. The boats that will take the divers out to the dive sites are just a few meters away.
What is really new is the choice of the dive sites! Avalon Diving Center, with its 15 years’ experience at Jardines de la Reina, has selected the most spectacular spots, which can only be reached after a one- or two-hour boat ride: Cayo Blanco, Cayo Sigua and Cayo Rosario are a real paradise for divers.
Cayo Blanco appears from a distance as a white-sand isle lost in the sea. It is just a short line of sand that falls into the blue. Underwater, there is a whole new world: cliffs encrusted with sponges and corals, tunnels and canyons that open into the blue. And on the top of the reef, just a few meters deep, divers remain enchanted at the sight of all kinds of corals hosting schools of fish: thousands of fish of different species moving all together to escape from a predator. There is an unthinkable quantity of fish, but here you are just 25 km. from the coast. The ‘sky rampage’ is literally a white-sand cliff where corals grow like bushes – a landscape you just read about in fairytales. Underwater, a few meters away from the barrier, there is a passage in the reef called Blue Hole that descends into the deep blue. The water is so clear that it is hard to tell if you are actually going down! Immersions in Cayo Rosario are also fantastic: dark rocks and tunnels. At the entrance, clouds of glass fish. Around them, the whitest sand you have ever seen. Here, it is possible to do one of our best immersions: divers get surrounded by nearly 15 dolphins that seem to play with their bubbles. Sometimes, they swim around the divers, nearly touching them, while a wave of emotions enraptures everyone. Then, they go up, breathe and swim back down, all over again…This is an unusual Cayo Largo, unfamiliar to most divers; you will be seeing places far from the Marina, reachable only through full-day trips.
