Hi,

I was wondering if you had already seen a Great White while diving (and I am not talking about cage diving) ? What was your reaction ? Where was it ?

I haven't yet seen a shark and I am wondering what will be my reaction when I will see my first one. So I am curious to hear about your experience after an encounter with a Great White.

I've never seen a great white, period. I've lived in California my whole life, sailing, diving, swimming, etc. in the waters here. There are supposedly Great whites around, but I've never seen one.

No I'm not refering to our current president, although he could well be one as well.

I live on Catalina Island and have seen GW's while kayaking but never underwater although they are seen occasionally here. I think I'd be more worried about them while kayaking than while diving (at least here). The divers I know who have seen them in our waters say they are inquisitive but not aggressive. They will come over to take a peek (vs a bite!) and then head off, often faster than you can follow them.

One of these friends has videotaped one GW that apparently frequents a particular dive site on the island (no not Casino Point) and has never had a problem. Occasionally they are known to enter Avalon Bay, usually small fish-eating juveniles (>= 13 ft).

When and if I DO see one, I like to think I'll take prompt, decisive action, that is, I'll poop in my wetsuit.
