Even of the approximately 10 shark attacks each year, how many of them are on divers. You might be surprised. It is far more risky to surf or swim at the surface.

The advice re: sharks typically attacking from below is certainly true about many species. Tell them that until the great whites and others learn to bury in the sand and pop out to surprise an "unwary" diver near the bottom, they are probably quite safe.
 
The fact is everything is potentially dangerous. The few "attacks" that happen every year are attributed to a select few species of sharks. Most of these species you have to try hard to find and likely they will not find you. If that's not enough consider where most attacks happen, on the surface. Humans just aren't enticing to sharks. One last thing, most divers who are bitten by sharks are provoking them. They are an amazing creature and should be treated with respect.
