Are the other divers you referred to using BP&W's? Your backplate, if steel, adds about 6 lbs of weight to your setup. If they are in jacket BC's with 20 and you have 14 with a 6 lb backplate you are all wearing the same amount of weight.

You probably already know this but just wanted to mention it just in case.

Weight varies a lot between my friends. In my DS, synthetic long johns, 200g thinsulate underwear, 100stl tank and jacket BC, I'm at 14#s in fresh water. Others I dive with are at 20. This keeps me pretty warm to the mid 40s. Add a vest, and the weight goes up 4 pounds. And I'm 5-11, 240- on the "fluffy" side, but in reasonable shape for my age. Just use what works for you.

It also has to do with how well you relax in the water. Several of my buddies are good divers, but fussy, hence they dive with more weight.

And ditch the cotton!
