I see on the profile box that I have 3 messages. but my inbox is empty. what am I missing?
How do i look at messages

Since they're in the Profile box, they're Profile Comments and not Conversations (Inbox).
The fastest way to them is hover over your username at the top right - when the window drops down one of the first text links in the top box to the right of your avatar is Your Profile Page - clicking that should take you to a page where they're shown.
Another way is select the Members tab then the New Profile Posts link just below it. This shows everyone's though, not just yours.

Anyone can see and post in your Profile Comments.
Keep that in mind if you are having a "conversation" based in your Profile Comments.
There are options available so that you can control who can post Profile Comments in your Profile.
