I have a couple of those. The split ring will go through the mount on the bottom of the GoPro. I have mine like that at the moment.
But having said that, as others have implied, this configuration is not very good for video as it’s hard to stabilise the camera.
It’s fine for stills, and I mostly take stills, but the GoPro is quite a compromise when it comes to stills (I see a Nikon W300 or Olympus TG-x in my future).
