Ikelite Substrobe A35

I have an Ikelite Auto35. I would like to get some input on using the macro lens with or without the Substrobe A35. The info guide says that it cannot be used with the macro because of the intensity and will result in an overexposed picture. I am a novice at this and am interested in other views. I have tried both ways but don't always get a good photo either way. Thanks

I have read that some are adding additional white plastic (like from a milk carton) to the on camera strobe diffuser for macro. Hope this helps.
