I recently bought a large batch of clips from Scuba.com. During a dive trip I was astonished to find that they are the same size as, and appear similar to but are incompatible with the long standard Fastex (trademark) type clips.

I have been buying these clips for many years and never ran into incompatibility. the original patent 4150464 expired years ago so anyone can make the clips. What I cannot understand is why anyone would make and sell clips that are incompatible with the widespred fastex design.

I have clips made by other manufacturers that are completely compatible. Some are labelled national molding of farmingdale NY and sold by princeton tech

The scuba.com clips are made in china but otherwise unlabeled

Per our telephone conservation, please return the items for a full refund. We are sorry the clips were not compatible with yours. There are a lot of different types of clips used by the manufactures. Our clips were intended to be used together as a male / female connection and are apparently not compatible with what you were using. We apologize for the inconvenience.

There is no clip czar. I'm sure even before any patent expired competitors were out there in some markets with knock-offs. With the patent expired the race is on to differentiate in any possible way. The real market is to lock in OEM accounts that buy gazillions of them. Cross brand compatibility does not serve that goal.

You can't count on anybody's clips matching up with anybody else's. Even small manufacturing differences can cause the clips to not mate or to come apart with no warning.

And FWIW, I wouldn't rely on a plastic buckle for anything that could pose a "safety hazard".
