Hi Folks,

As part of our efforts to promote local scuba diving, the Long Island
Divers Association has been participating in an Instructor Wreck Diving
Initiative with local dive boats. Active instructors are invited to join
us on local, novice level wreck dives at reduced rates and meet the
Captain and crew, observe boat operations, and hear about the incentives
that Captains will offer to instructors who accompany their graduate
students on local wreck dives.

This past Saturday, August 30th, found us heading into Brooklyn to meet
Captain Robert Hayes, owner of the dive boat Karen II. Torrential rains
thankfully gave way to overcast skies as we prepared to load the boat.
Coming aboard were Mia and Mike Interrante, instructors and owners of
Kings County Scuba. They also brought along instructor and local
photography legend Joe Koppelman. Also along was instructor Mike Carey,
owner of Captain Mikes' Diving, accompanied by Jill. Rounding out the
roster was Pauly Cama, instructor and service technician for Swim and
Scuba.

Calm seas made the short trip out to the remains of the USS Turner a
pleasure. A Bristol class Destroyer, the Turner was sunk by a German
torpedo in 1944 in 55-60 feet of water. The wreck was partially salvaged
following an incident with an oil tanker, leaving a scattered debris
field teeming with marine life. Every hole that I looked in contained a
huge American Eel, some appearing to be over 6 feet long. Visibility at
the bottom was reduced due the earlier storms, while at the surface
you could see at least 50 feet. After a couple of excellent dives we
headed back to Brooklyn under a blazing sun, enjoying a meal courtesy of
LIDA, some great cigars, and even a beer or two. Many thanks to Captain
Hayes and mates Glen Bento and Lou Scarcella, who went out of their way
to ensure that a good time was had by all. Your efforts are greatly
appreciated! diveboatkaren.com

This Sunday, September 7th, will find us aboard Captain Howard Klein's
"Eagles Nest". Our target will be the "Iberia", an ocean-going freighter
sunk in 70 ft of water in the late 1800's. To this day the Iberia yields
amazing artifacts to those willing to spend some time digging in the
sand. Always an interesting dive, the Iberia is just a short trip from
the dock. We invite any active local instructor to come and meet the
Captain and crew and enjoy a day of diving aboard the "Eagles Nest" at
the reduced rate of $75. Please contact me at 631 265 2547 or reply to this message for more information.

Since the boat has a capacity of 24 divers, this trip is also open to
anyone who would like to come out and join us. Please contact Captain
Howard Klein at 516 695 8544 to make your reservation.

The boat sails at 8am, be sure that you are there no later than 07:30 to
sign in and get your gear stowed. If you have never been a passenger on
the Eagles Nest before then you should be there at 7am. Food and refreshments
on the boat will be provided by the Long Island Divers Association. You
can expect to be back at the dock around 3pm. See you there!
