One afternoon a few buddies and I were diving a wreck off of Islamorada. After the first team surfaced they told us there was a bunch of lionfish on the wreck. So when I jumped in for the dive I took my spear. There was around a dozen on the wreck. After I shot one I put the spear down for a second and when I went to grab it, something was grabbing the other side. I looked down and noticed a mantis shrimp trying his hardest to rip the lionfish off the spear. When I took it off the spear and floated it towards him it was gone in a blink of an eye.
The next day we dove the site again feeding it several more fish while taking some video. After that we got the idea to try to feed it a live one. So, on the next dive we caught a live lionfish in a homemade net and placed it over the burrow. Once we got the fish with in striking range the mantis shrimp grabbed it and it was gone.
The dives made for some pretty interesting video clips. I finally got around to putting them up on Youtube. scottcosta44 - YouTube
