Whilst I admire the working they're trying to do, they certainly have their work cut out. Two small, pathetic, half broken boats and about the same number of rangers from what I could see last November.

There simply isn't either the money or political will to make any significant impact on the long liners. The total annual budget for patrolling/monitoring the Island is $1,000,000. This is a drop in the ocean given what's at stake and in comparison to the kind of money being made by the long liners. :-(

Thanks for sharing and kudos to the park rangers. Having been to Cocos I was disturbed to see so many sharks with fish hooks hanging out of their mouths. I also don't think having a protected area only 12 miles from Cocos Island is sufficient. Cocos is truly an unbelievable place and we need to put pressure on Costa Rica and the international community to provide more resources to protect the sharks who inhabit Cocos.
